Here’s a selection of photos from Barcelona we found on the popular Flickr site covering various aspects of pickpocketing in our city.

Photo #1 by Joel and Trish Chong from Australia, taken on July 11th, 2009 and viewed 19 times.

They commented: “Pickpockets – Trish was expecting the pickpockets to look a lot less civilian and a lot meaner with tattoos and piercings…..”

Photo #2 by José Eugenio Gómez Rodríguez from Mexico, taken on June 26th, 2009 and viewed 24 times.

This translates into English as: “We were walking around the “Gothic District” (very nice) of Barcelona when suddenly a little in front of us we saw a small commotion, screams of women and a man beginning to hit another, who began to run, with the luck that he went toward a taxi…. it hit him. On the floor, the other one started kicking, but the female voice shouted “The wallet!!… The wallet!” Then he stopped kicking to find his wallet under the taxi. Then I realised that he had attempted to “bag” a tourist. The thief got up and ran towards me, but I wasn’t ready to take a photo until he had already passed where I was.”

Photo #4 by Lynne from England, taken on October 8th, 2006 and viewed 78 times.

She commented: “Pickpocket – Beware the pickpockets, this one (in the yellow) had just tried to lift my brother-in-law’s wallet – foiled by my sister. She soon scuttled off when she saw me taking this photo – blurred to prevent identification, we think they were working together, posing as tourists.”

There were two comments to her photo on Flickr.

First, by “carwax”, who said: “your too kind to blur out their identity. let’s see those crooks!”

Second, by the photographer herself who said: “It was tempting, but I am not judge and jury. We didn’t report her to the police after all. Also she didn’t get away with anything and she had a scare. Let that suffice. It is interesting in tourist areas to play “spot the picpocket” though. Just watch for people who stand around trying to blend in, they’ll always be carrying a map or a newspaper, but not really doing anything.”

She commented: “Money belt DON’T – When wearing a money belt, try to not wear it over your clothes and on your back… I was tempted to pickpocket them myself ;>”

There was one comment to her photo on Flickr.

“deep-ina-pockett” said “totally agree, arabella! why have a money belt if you don’t WEAR IT LIKE A BELT!!! you should have pickpocketed them just to teach them a lesson.”

Photo #6 by Christine McIntosh from Scotland, taken on September 16th, 2010 and viewed 19 times.

She commented: “Las Ramblas, evening – We had been so warned of the dangers of pickpockets that it felt like being in an armed column as we marched along clutching our bags.”

There were two comments to her photo on Flickr.

The first, “poor_mans_platini” said “Our hotel was just on the right hand side of this picture. We witnessed daily pick pocketing activity!”

The second, from the photographer herself, replied “Maybe we scared them off – all 53 of us!”

    Hi!!

I took this picture in Barcelona, but it has nothing to do with pickpocketing…. It talks about something beyond. I appreciate your initiative but I would like you not to link my picture with pickpocketing. ;)

    Thank you very much!

Hi, Isabel – thanks for your comment. Sure, the word refers to thieves as in the political sense of the word. That accepted, do you still want me to “not to link” to your picture? I’m unsure how not using it benefits you, or our initiative.

        Hi!

It’s not a problem for me to have the picture in your page. I just wrote to emphasize the fact that it talks about thieves in another sense. But it’s ok ;)

        Thanks,
        Isabel
