That vital thoroughfare through the heart of Barcelona, Via Laietana is the scene of this next scam, first reported yesterday by Tara Cuesta on our Facebook group.
It requires a taxi, which you jump into at the taxi rank at the junction with Plaça Catedral, you place your bag on the back seat beside you. All fine so far.
As you tell your driver where you want to go, the door you entered opens and a guy looks as if he’s about to get in. Distracted, whilst you tell him the taxi is occupied, guy#2 opens the other rear door quietly and he plucks your bag sitting on the back seat. They then disappear and you’re left sitting there.
Ingredients: one taxi, one bag, two guys, and a legal system that doesn’t punish bag-snatchers that the police have arrested multiple times in the past.
Now, to be fair to taxi drivers in Barcelona, the vast majority of them are good guys, so I’m not inclined to believe there’s any complicity here on the behalf of the drivers.
Be careful out there folks!
