Local Poet Killed for a Bicycle

A well respected 33-year-old local man was stabbed and killed last Thursday morning as he left his apartment near Placa Sant Just in the centre of Barcelona city.

Victim: Salvador Iborra

At 23:11hrs on Wednesday night the victim had posted a video on his Facebook about the beauty of snow. Seven hours later he was dead.

The motive for his murder is still unclear, but it’s believed that it involved the robbery of a bicycle. It’s presumed he tried to intervene to stop the theft, and died as a result of his actions.

It’s common in Barcelona that robbers will use scare-tactics to stop people involving themselves in local policing. A local woman recently told Robbed in Barcelona how a thief on the metro hit her full force on her jaw with his elbow because she tried to stop him snatching a bag. A football fan commented on our blog recently how he pursued a robber who had stolen his wallet down Las Ramblas and into a side street, only to find that a car-full of the robbers acquaintances had followed him and threatened violence against him.

The victim of Thursday morning’s crime, Salvador Iborra was both a university lecturer and a poet – he had published three books of poetry – and he will be sorely missed by his family and friends.

Police have detailed two men of Moroccan nationality suspected of being involved in the incident.

This is an incredible outrage. We must conduct demonstrations for increased police presence and longer criminal sentences for theft and violence as well as a plan to dismantle organized thieves who stalk the streets without fear of impunity. To not act on this will reveal a society who has little regard for human life. A shame and a folly that will result in chaos for all humanity.

My God – I completely missed this story last October even though I live around the corner from Plaza St. Just . Somebody has to take control of the situation in the centre of town soon, before it’s too late & it just explodes into a vigelante situation. I just so sick of how pathetic the police are here & the absurd resistance to CCTV cameras ……..

Surprised you missed it if you lived around the corner, David; it was a shocking story.

Completely missed it . Where I have my studio in Sta Caterina we were all shocked when Ali – the 18 year old son of a Pakistani shopkeeper was shot in the head & killed last year – I have a lot of photos of his ‘ wake’ & demo made by residents afterwards. I’ll pass them onto you if you like – also images of banners that we made up, knowing that the press/media would be down.
The official line in El Periodico / La vanguardia was that the murderer was a ‘French citizen’ – I suppose to take the sting out of the ethnicity factor – however to all of the Pakistani community & vecinos , it was well known to be an Algerian with a French passport…..
Rob – love what you’re doing here with the site REALLY REALLY NEEDED.
ps: please see yesterday’s El Pais online for the story of the murder of a Chinese trader & his baby daughter in Rome & the crime against the Chinese community in eastern Rome coming from Magrebi delinquents. Unbelievable story & could easily have happened in Barna….
