Deputy Carmen de Rivera Plá from the parliamentary sub-group, Ciudadanos-Partido de la Ciudadanía, was robbed on Wednesday October 5th while sitting on a bench outside the main entrance to the Catalan Parliament.
According to the publication “Nació Digital“, she was speaking on her mobile phone when an individual approached and asked for directions to Arc de Triomf. Whilst distracted by this enquiry, a second individual took her handbag. This is a common tactic amongst thieves in the area. We have testimonies from scores of individuals on our Facebook group who have experienced this.
The 55-year old deputy reported the incident to the police. The bag was recovered the following day and while her documents remained untouched, the thieves had helped themselves to €40 in cash. The deputy expressed her appreciation to the police forces involved in the recovery, Mossos d’Esquadra and Guardia Urbana.
The bag was found in a rubbish container at 4am in the morning. Having stolen only €40 – much less than the €400 required to take action under Spanish law, as she will know since she’s a graduate of law from the University of Barcelona – the matter will likely be dropped.
Robbed in Barcelona wonders if she will now, as a political representative of the people, take some action to resolve this problem that others have been suffering for years?
